Hawaii attractions Kings Guard . This was the home of the King's Guard Drill Team, a drill team whose unique drill style was partly attributed to its isolation. A large military presence required the rigors of daily Guard drill and discipline. By early 1. 92. 0s Hawaii, ROTC programs had opened to select high schools in Honolulu. The cadets learned Drill and Ceremony from local military personnel. Specialized regulation teams organized within the units, and soon after, exhibition drill was born. It was taught by a select few who had little knowledge of the subject. There was no media such as television and videos. If you saw something you liked, you would memorize it and try to recreate it from memory. By the 1. 95. 0s, Hawaii had become the crossroads of the Pacific, and any drill information that passed through was quickly absorbed. The King's Guard reorganized itself in 1. Members of a local championship drill team were recruited to create a special attraction which would revive and preserve Hawaiian history of the 1. The promoters wanted an attraction that was visibly authentic. They wanted the King's Guards in 1. Century uniforms with drill team talents so as to give a unique flair. They launched the Changing of the Guard ceremony. It featured a flag lowering ceremony followed by a drill exhibition performance. Each Guard member was selected for his discipline, positive attitude, and willingness to contribute to team effort. They Instilled discipline in a number of ways. The most unusual was in the form of Hawaiian hula. In ancient Hawaii, the hula was a rigid form of discipline used by Hawaiian warriors to teach battle and defense techniques. Warriors would respond to drum commands and rhythms to coordinate battle formations. Their skills were practiced relentlessly until perfection was reached. Because ancient Hawaii had no form of written language, these techniques were memorized and passed down from teacher to student. The King's Guard became a magnet, attracting recruits who were very dedicated drill men and wanted a higher level of exhibition drill. They were very creative and talented as well as eager to put their ideas into action. Exhibition drill proved to be a serious endeavor as well as an enjoyment. It was serious in that there was a responsibility to foster the creative spirit, the driving force for each Guard member. It was enjoyment because it was a true passion. Flexibility was a necessary trait. Guards were instructed in several basic formations and position changes. They were rotated on a daily basis to form specialized teams. It was not uncommon that on one day Guards would perform in a local parade, and the next day join a 1. As the years passed, the Guards were more and more in high demand, Their promotional value to the State of Hawaii was immeasurable. They represented Hawaii on numerous occasions as ambassadors of goodwill and aloha in Presidential Inaugural Parades at our nation's capital in Washington D. C. They performed as Honor Guard details in far off places such as Hong Kong and Singapore.
Whenever the Guards traveled, they brought a touch of Hawaii to share with the people they met. It could be as simple as a flower lei, or even a box of pineapples. Their travels had taken them to over ten countries with performances in more than forty cities. The Guards were very fortunate to have the opportunity to serve their community in this capacity. Daily practice was necessary to keep the Guards fine- tuned and sharp. Because of Hawaii's excellent year- round weather, they could be found practicing in the streets and open areas in Waikiki. First time visitors were often shocked to witness a group of men with rifles, then relieved to find the rifles were used only for precision drill. The King's Guard could be found at cultural events, convention shows, weddings, funerals, judging drill events, and even coaching local Junior ROTC drill teams. Their presence was a source of pride to the Hawaiian community. They had become the longest running daily event in Waikiki. Camera- toting visitors from around the world were drawn to King's Village at 6: 1. Visitors were further educated about historical aspects of Hawaiian nobility and the role in which the Guards played. Since Hawaii is the only state with a royal palace on American soil, remnants of the old Hawaiian royalty continues to be a popular theme repeated again and again throughout Hawaii. On May 1. 6, 2. 01. King's Guard performed their last routine in Waikiki. Unique style of drill routines created in Hawaii had become Hawaiian tradition. Preserving and sharing the art of Hawaii exhibition drill had been achieved for more than 4. To be Hawaiian is to share culture. Today King's Village continues to share Hawaiian culture with Hawaii Hula Company. Performances are 6: 3. Thursdays and Sundays. Fire knife dancing and Polynesian drumming are on Thursdays. Hula dancing and ukulele playing are on Sundays. See memorabilia from hotels, movie theaters, restaurants, stores and attractions from the past. Authentic original aloha shirts, postcards, tiki mugs and decanters are just a few of the items on display that will bring back fond memories to locals as well as visitors. LEARNING OUTCOME: Upon completion of this continuing education course, you will demonstrate an understanding of wound assessment and management for patients with acute and chronic wounds in various clinical settings. INTRODUCTIONThe skin is the largest organ in the human body, comprising approximately 1. The skin maintains our internal environment while protecting us from the external environment. It allows us to experience a wide range of stimuli, from pleasure to pain. A break in the continuity of the skin surface is the first step in the formation of a wound and provides a potential portal of entry for infection. A wound can be as simple as a surface abrasion, or it can be an extensive, life- threatening destruction of tissue that reaches down to and includes the internal organs of the body. While the healing process is basically the same for all wounds, there are many extenuating factors that will either expedite or impede healing. Wound care does not belong to any one healthcare profession. Successful outcomes are achieved when an interdisciplinary team approach is used, calling on the expertise of many different clinicians and employing many different treatment modalities—from simple dressings to advanced treatments such as negative- pressure wound therapy and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Clinicians encounter wounds in every healthcare setting, from the penetrating gunshot wound that is rushed to the ER, to acute and chronic wounds that need to be treated in the acute care hospital setting, outpatient clinics, nursing homes, hospice care, and in- home care. Over 7. 5 million people in the United States currently have a chronic wound, and as the population ages with a concurrent increase in chronic health conditions, this number is set to increase (Krasner, 2. For instance, in the United States diabetes is the number one cause of nontraumatic lower extremity amputations, accounting for approximately 8. Aggressive wound care is a critical part of limb salvage programs (Armstrong & Lavery, 2. Overall, it is estimated that chronic wound care costs run at around $2. ANCIENT WOUND CAREWound care can be traced back to the earliest civilizations. The ancient Greeks were among the first to highlight the importance of wound cleansing. They washed wounds with clean water, which was frequently boiled first; they used vinegar and wine as cleansing agents. The Egyptians are thought to have been the first people who applied honey to wounds. Their wound dressings, which they referred to as “plasters,” were a composite of honey, grease, and lint. In the first known records of wound care in the Ebers Papyrus, dated 1. BC, bleeding blood vessels were described as being “burnt with fire” (i. One of the earliest descriptions of the “four cardinal signs of inflammation”—rubor, tumor, calor, et dolor (redness, swelling, heat, and pain)—came from the Romans. Source: Krasner, 2. Shah, 2. 01. 2. SKIN—THE EXTERNAL BARRIERTo properly understand the occurrence, continuation, and healing of wounds, it is necessary to first look at the skin. The skin is comprised of two layers: the epidermis, made up of four to five thin layers stacked on top of each other, and the dermis (often referred to as the “true skin”), a layer of connective tissue directly below the epidermis. Beneath the dermis is the subcutaneous tissue, which separates the skin from the underlying muscles, tendons, joints, and bones. Skin varies in thickness from less than one millimeter in the eyelids to greater than four millimeters on the soles of the feet. The skin has two layers, the epidermis and the dermis, below which lies subcutaneous tissue. It is a layer of dividing, reproducing cells that migrate upward. As they travel, they differentiate and become filled with keratin, a tough, fibrous protein. The mature cells are pushed to the surface, where they die; thus, the outermost layer of the epidermis is made of flat, dead keratinocytes. The stratum basale also contains melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing melanin, the pigment that adds color to the skin and also protects against the damaging effects of ultraviolet light. Shallow wounds to the epidermis usually heal rapidly and without complications. Usual skin thickness is reestablished, and there is no scar formation. Dermis. The layer of skin directly beneath the epidermis is the dermis. A basement membrane separates these two layers. The dermis is mainly connective tissue and is therefore much stronger than the epidermis. The dermis varies in thickness across the surface of the body, but everywhere it is significantly thicker than the overlying epidermis. The dermis is itself made up of two layers: the papillary layer is directly beneath the epidermis, and the reticular layer is below that. The primary function of the papillary dermis is to supply nutrients to the epidermis. The reticular dermis contains fibroblasts cells, which synthesize the connective tissue proteins, collagen, and elastin. These cells are responsible for the strength and elasticity of the skin. The reticular layer of the dermis also contains macrophages, which are essential for wound healing, and mast cells, a key component of our immune system. The tissue of the dermis also contains small blood vessels, lymph vessels, nerves with their endings, and the smooth muscle fibers of hair follicles. Hair, nails, sweat glands, and sebaceous glands are sunken epidermal appendages that lie in deep valleys in the dermis surrounded by a row of germinative epidermal cells. Subcutaneous Tissue. Beneath the dermis is a layer of subcutaneous tissue containing fat. Wound care can be costly and complicated. World Wide Wounds is an electronic wound management journal dedicated to promoting good practice and better communication in the specialty of woundcare (wound care). Silver Antimicrobial Dressings in Wound Management: A Comparison of Antibacterial, Physical, and Chemical Characteristics. 1 Prevention and management of wound infection Guidance from WHO’s Department of Violence and Injury Prevention and Disability and the Department of Essential. The thickness of the subcutaneous layer varies throughout the body. It is thickest along the anterior thigh and thinnest on the back of the hands. Besides fat cells, subcutaneous tissue contains blood vessels, lymph vessels, and nerves. The subcutaneous layer is held together by a continuous sheet of fibrous membrane that runs parallel to the surface of the skin. This membrane is called the superficial fascia. The subcutaneous tissue provides insulation to the body, and it is also important in pressure redistribution. Individuals with a thin layer of subcutaneous tissue and limited mobility are at high risk for the development of pressure ulcers. Those with excess subcutaneous tissue can have a harder time with wound healing since subcutaneous tissue is not well profused, and this in turn decreases the blood supply to the dermis and epidermis (Tortora & Derrickson, 2. The Desert Lion Project and the information posted on this website has become the target of an increasingly calculated and. The majority of patients undergoing amputation of the lower limb have peripheral vascular disease, often resulting in significant morbidity and mortality. The Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing Certification Board encourages you to keep them active because of the value they bring to you. A stab wound is a specific form of penetrating trauma to the skin that results from a knife or a similar pointed object that is "deeper than it is wide". The subcutaneous tissue is a loosely organized compartment. When skin wounds extend deeper than the dermis, dirt is easily pushed into and spread within the subcutaneous tissue. This increases the risk of infection and requires that deep wounds be cleaned thoroughly. Beneath the subcutaneous tissue layer, structures (such as muscles and organs) are enclosed in their own separate connective tissue sheaths. The generic name for these sheaths is deep fasciae. Deep fasciae generally look off- white in fresh wounds. When treating a wound, tears in the deep fasciae are repaired whenever possible. DEFINITIONS OF WOUNDSA wound is a break in the continuity of the skin surface that alters the normal functioning of the skin and the underlying structures (Beitz, 2. Wounds can occur in otherwise healthy human beings at any stage in their lifespan. They can be as simple as a scrape or as a complex as a deep, life- threatening wound affecting internal organs. Wounds affect millions of individuals, making it imperative to develop standard terminologies to define and classify wounds. By Depth. One way of classifying wounds is according to their depth and the amount of tissue destruction involved. The terms partial thickness and full thickness are used to describe wounds of varying depths. A wound that is limited to the epidermis and the dermis is a partial- thickness wound. A wound that extends beyond the dermal layers is considered a full- thickness wound. By Time. Another way to classify wounds is according to the length of time they have existed. ACUTE WOUNDSAcute wounds happen suddenly and are normally related to trauma or injury. Such a traumatic wound is also often a mixture of types. Types of acute wounds are described below: Lacerations are tears. When made by a knife- like object, a laceration is a narrow, deep wound with sharp edges. When made by a blunt object, a laceration is a rip with jagged edges. Crushes or contusions are compression wounds. A crush wound bruises and damages the skin and the underlying tissue, although the skin can remain closed in some crush wounds. Punctures are narrow, deep wounds. Typically, punctures have small openings with sharp edges. Puncture wounds have a relatively high risk of infection. Avulsions are wounds in which tissue has been torn out. Sometimes, the avulsed tissue remains partly connected to its normal surroundings. Burns are wounds made by external destructive energy (e. First- degree burns are superficial and red. Second- degree wounds include damage to the dermis and produce blisters. Third- degree burns go deeper than the dermis and produce dry, dead tissue. CHRONIC WOUNDSThere are several definitions for a chronic wound. The Wound Healing Society (Cooper & Knighton, 1. National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel and the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel, in their 2. Prevention and Treatment of Pressure Ulcers, defines a chronic wound as “a wound that does not proceed through the normal stages of healing but becomes stuck in one phase.”The underlying principle is that a chronic wound fails to progress through the normal sequence of wound healing in a timely manner and becomes stalled in one phase of healing, usually the inflammatory phase (Krasner, 2. It is important to remember that all chronic wounds start out as acute wounds. A surgically dehisced wound is an example of an acute wound that develops into a chronic wound. The benefits of dandelion tea revealed. Dandelion tea has been prized for years by proponents of natural and alternative health remedies for a number of reasons. It has been shown to enhance detoxification, by stimulating urination and replacing the potassium lost in the process. Even more noteworthy, dandelion tea is widely known as a potent disease- fighter, credited with boosting the body’s immune system and helping the body to heal, while combating heart disease, combating cancer and reducing the effects of aging. Scientific studies highlight the power dandelion tea. The proposed clinical study, which will take place at the Windsor Regional Cancer Centre, will involve patients with end stage blood- related cancers, such as lymphoma and leukemia. The study will address the question of whether results of the clinical trial will mimic the earlier lab test results, where dandelion tea containing dandelion root extract was shown to kill cancer cells. During the lab tests, researchers studied the effects of the dandelion tea formula on a number of commercially available leukemia cells. The team found that the dandelion tea caused cancer cells to destroy themselves, known as apoptosis. As part of the process, the research team created a new company, Windsor Botanical Therapeutics, in order to gain the ability to form a contract with a licensed Health Canada drug manufacturer for the purpose of creating the dandelion extract that can be used clinically. Pandey says the first phase of the clinical study is part of the overall Dandelion Root Project, an effort designed to bring to light the scientific evidence for using dandelion root extract and other natural health products in a safe, effective way to combat cancer. Is Canada going to set an example for the rest of the world? This phase of the clinical trials already have the blessing of Health Canada in 2. The end goal of this early stage will be primarily to determine the correct dose necessary to impact cancer cells. The research got under way after Dr. Pandey was approached by an oncologist who noticed that cancer patients drinking dandelion tea were improving. The results have been promising enough to attract financial support via grants from philanthropists. Only time will tell if this information can get out to the general public. There are many people – within the pharmaceutical industry – that want to keep the public in the dark. It’s up to each and every one of us to spread the word. We want to hear how dandelion tea benefits you! Just about everybody knows what a dandelion is. In the western world it is a weed, but in many other societies it is an important herb that is used to treat many common diseases and conditions of the human body. It is also a food, being used in salads and the roots are also used by some as a coffee substitute the same as chicory. It is also used to make a herbal tea, and most people have likely heard of dandelion tea. However, its medicinal properties are not so well known, even though it has been use for hundreds, if not thousands, of years for the treatment of many conditions including those associated with the gall bladder, liver and kidneys. However, that is not all, and there are several more traditional uses of dandelion in the folk medicine of many different countries including conditions as diverse as water retention and eczema. So, taking all of this into consideration, what exactly are the main benefits of dandelion to the body and what is it that provides these benefits? Dandelion contains its fair share of minerals and vitamins, and is rich in vitamin C of course, with its strong antioxidant properties. It also contains the antioxidant vitamin A together with several B vitamins and the sunshine vitamin, vitamin D, which is so important for the absorption of calcium by the kidneys and into the bone structure. The minerals it contains is like an encyclopedia entry of minerals important to the human body. It’s not so much what minerals dandelion contains, as what it doesn’t contain. The list includes phosphorus, iron, magnesium, calcium, potassium, silicon, manganese and boron, and the organic nutrients include lecithin, carotenoids, terpenoids, tannins, sterols, choline, inulin, aspargine and so on. It would take a whole book to describe the health benefits of each of these, but an attempt will be made later to discuss the more important of them. Suffice it to say that the list contains antioxidants, anti- inflammatories, and substances that help to reduce blood cholesterol levels and also maintain the health of your blood and major organs. However, the effect of dandelion on the liver and the digestive system are due largely to substances known collectively as taraxacin. That is what gives dandelion its bitter taste. What was once known as taraxin, is now known to consist of sesquiterpene lactones known as eudesmanolide and germacranolide, which although claimed to be unique to the dandelion, are very similar to other sesquiterpenes found in chicory. In fact, dicaffeolquinic acid and chicoric acid (dicaffeoyltartaric acid) have been found to comprise a significant proportion of the extract from dandelion roots, together with a number of phenolic acids and flavanoids. Each of these, of course, is important and effective antioxidants, responsible for many positive health effects in the body. Among the more important of these is the stimulation of the circulation of the blood throughout the body. Pusheen The CatSushi - Wikipedia. Sushi(. Styles of sushi and its presentation vary widely, but the key ingredient in all cases is the sushi rice, also referred to as shari(. It is often prepared with raw seafood, but some common varieties of sushi use cooked ingredients, and many other sorts are vegetarian. We carry hundreds of bras in every color and style. Browse our styles that include open cup bras, push up bras, and more. Sushi is often served with pickled ginger, wasabi, and soy sauce. Daikon radish is popular as a garnish. Sushi is often confused with sashimi, a related Japanese dish consisting of thinly sliced raw meat or fish and an optional serving of rice. Sashimi is served as slices, unlike sushi, which is served as rolls. History. The lacto- fermentation of the rice prevented the fish from spoiling. The term sushi comes from an antiquated grammatical form no longer used in other contexts, and literally means . Funazushi, a strongly- flavoured and odoured narezushi made near Lake Biwa in Japan, most strongly resembles the traditional fermented dish among modern sushi types. Vinegar began to be added to the preparation of narezushi in the Muromachi period (1. In addition to increasing the rice's sourness, the vinegar significantly increased the dish's longevity, causing the fermentation process to be shortened and eventually abandoned. The primitive sushi would be furthered developed in Osaka, where over several centuries it became oshi- zushi; in this preparation, the seafood and rice were pressed into shape with wooden (typically bamboo) molds. This practice reached Edo (contemporary Tokyo) by the 1. Hanaya's version was a precursor to fast food; by avoiding all fermentation, the dish could be prepared therefore very quickly, and each roll was shaped for conveniently eating with one's hands. Portion sizes shrank to roughly a third of the previous norm to further accommodate this principle. Clockwise from top- left: nigirizushi, makizushi, temaki. The common ingredient in all types of sushi is vinegared sushi rice. Fillings, toppings, condiments, and preparation vary widely. It is commonly eaten because it is filling, fast and easy to make. It is named after the Shinto god Inari. Foxes, messengers of Inari are believed to have a fondness for fried tofu, and an Inari- zushi roll has pointed corners that resemble fox ears. It should not be confused with inari maki, which is a roll filled with flavored fried tofu. Cone sushi is a variant of inarizushi originating in Hawaii that includes green beans, carrots, and gobo along with rice, wrapped in a triangular aburage piece. It is often sold in okazu- ya (Japanese delis) and as a component of bento boxes. Makizushi is generally wrapped in nori (seaweed), but is occasionally wrapped in a thin omelette, soy paper, cucumber, or shiso (perilla) leaves. Makizushi is usually cut into six or eight pieces, which constitutes a single roll order. Below are some common types of makizushi, but many other kinds exist. During the evening of the Setsubun festival, it is traditional in the Kansai region to eat uncut futomaki in its cylindrical form, where it is called eh. Strips of tamagoyakiomelette, tiny fish roe, chopped tuna, and oborowhitefish flakes are typical non- vegetarian fillings. Popular protein ingredients are fish cakes, imitation crab meat, eggs, or seasoned beef rib- eye. Vegetables usually include cucumbers, spinach, carrot and takuan(. After the makizushi has been rolled and sliced, it is typically served with takuan. Short grain white rice is usually used, although short- grain brown rice, like olive oil on nori, is now becoming more widespread among the health- conscious. Rarely, sweet rice is mixed in makizushi rice. Nowadays, the rice in makizushi can be many kinds of black rice, boiled rice and cereals etc. Besides the common ingredients listed above, some varieties may include cheese, spicy cooked squid, yakiniku, kamaboko, lunch meat, sausage, bacon or spicy tuna. The nori may be brushed with sesame oil or sprinkled with sesame seeds. In a variation, sliced pieces of makizushi may be lightly fried with egg coating.
Hosomaki (. A typical hosomaki has a diameter of about two and a half centimeters (1 in). Traditionally, kappamaki is consumed to clear the palate between eating raw fish and other kinds of food, so that the flavors of the fish are distinct from the tastes of other foods. Although it is believed that the word tekka, meaning . Fatty tuna is often used in this style. The typical ingredients include kanpy. People usually eat the eh. A typical temaki is about ten centimeters (4 in) long, and is eaten with fingers because it is too awkward to pick it up with chopsticks. For optimal taste and texture, temaki must be eaten quickly after being made because the nori cone soon absorbs moisture from the filling and loses its crispness, making it somewhat difficult to bite through. For this reason, the nori in pre- made or take- out temaki is sealed in plastic film which is removed immediately before eating. Skinned and gutted fish are stuffed with salt, placed in a wooden barrel, doused with salt again, then weighed down with a heavy tsukemonoishi (pickling stone). As days pass, water seeps out and is removed. After six months, this sushi can be eaten, remaining edible for another six months or more. Push UpsIt is usually served with a bit of wasabi; neta are typically fish such as salmon, tuna or other seafood. Certain toppings are typically bound to the rice with a thin strip of nori, most commonly octopus (tako), freshwater eel (unagi), sea eel (anago), squid (ika), and sweet egg (tamago). One order of a given type of fish typically results in two pieces, while a sushi set (sampler dish) may contain only one piece of each topping. Gunkan- maki was invented at the Ginza Kyubey restaurant in 1. A block- shaped piece is formed using a wooden mold, called an oshibako. The chef lines the bottom of the oshibako with the toppings, covers them with sushi rice, and then presses the lid of the mold down to create a compact, rectilinear block. The block is removed from the mold and then cut into bite- sized pieces. Particularly famous is . Bjorn Eirik Olsen, a Norwegian businessman, introduced the use of salmon as a sushi ingredient to Japan in the 1. Such creations to suit the Western palate were initially fueled by the invention of the California roll (a norimaki with crab (later, imitation crab), cucumber, and avocado). A wide variety of popular rolls (norimaki and uramaki) has evolved since. Norway roll is another variant of uramakizushi filled with tamago (omelette), imitation crab and cucumber, rolled with shiso leaf and nori, topped with slices of Norwegian salmon, garnished with lemon and mayonnaise. Uramaki differs from other makimono because the rice is on the outside and the nori inside. The filling is in the center surrounded by nori, then a layer of rice, and optionally an outer coating of some other ingredients such as roe or toasted sesame seeds. It can be made with different fillings, such as tuna, crab meat, avocado, mayonnaise, cucumber or carrots. Examples of variations include the rainbow roll (an inside- out topped with thinly sliced maguro, hamachi, ebi, sake and avocado) and the caterpillar roll (an inside- out topped with thinly sliced avocado). Also commonly found is the . Other rolls may include a variety of ingredients, including chopped scallops, spicy tuna, beef or chicken teriyaki roll, okra, and assorted vegetables such as cucumber and avocado, and the . In the Southern United States, many sushi restaurants prepare rolls using crawfish. Sometimes, rolls are made with brown rice or black rice, which appear in Japanese cuisine as well. Per Food and Drug Administration regulations, raw fish served in the United States must be frozen prior to serving in order to kill parasites. Though the menu names of dishes often vary by restaurant, some examples include: Sushi roll name. Definition. Alaska(n) rolla variant of the California roll with raw salmon on the inside, or layered on the outside. Also sometimes referred to as salmon skin rolls outside of British Columbia, Canada. Is a variation on spicy tuna roll. It has to be cooled to room temperature before being used for a filling in a sushi or else it will get too sticky while being seasoned. Traditionally, the mixing is done with a hangiri, which is a round, flat- bottom wooden tub or barrel, and a wooden paddle (shamoji). Sushi rice is prepared with short- grain Japanese rice, which has a consistency that differs from long- grain strains such as those from India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Thailand, and Vietnam. The essential quality is its stickiness or glutinousness, although the type of rice used for sushi is different from glutinous rice. Freshly harvested rice (shinmai) typically contains too much water, and requires extra time to drain the rice cooker after washing. In some fusion cuisine restaurants, short- grain brown rice and wild rice are also used. There are regional variations in sushi rice and, of course, individual chefs have their individual methods. Most of the variations are in the rice vinegar dressing: the Kant. Nori is a type of algae, traditionally cultivated in the harbors of Japan. Originally, algae was scraped from dock pilings, rolled out into thin, edible sheets, and dried in the sun, in a process similar to making rice paper. Today, the commercial product is farmed, processed, toasted, packaged, and sold in sheets. The size of a nori sheet influences the size of makimono. A full- size sheet produces futomaki, and a half produces hosomaki and temaki. To produce gunkan and some other makimono, an appropriately- sized piece of nori is cut from a whole sheet. Nori by itself is an edible snack and is available with salt or flavored with teriyaki sauce. The flavored variety, however, tends to be of lesser quality and is not suitable for sushi. When making fukusazushi, a paper- thin omelette may replace a sheet of nori as the wrapping. The omelette is traditionally made on a rectangular omelette pan (makiyakinabe), and used to form the pouch for the rice and fillings. |
